Hello, Hello, Valley View Rotarians! ALERT! Our meeting this week is OFFSITE at the Trane All-Abilities Park... do not go to Famous Dave's! Also, remember to bring your own coffee. Muffins, bananas and yogurt will be provided. This is rain or shine, so if it rains we will remain inside the shelter for the program.
Quite a few news items to report this week:
- CONGRATULATIONS to our superb fellow Valley View Rotarians who were honored with rewards and recognition at last Wednesday's Avenues of Service Dinner event at the La Crescent Event Center! Greg Clark and Julie Nelson accepted the 2020-21 Community Service award for Be the Brew Meister; Janie Morgan and Steph Fraase each received Lifetime Achievement awards, Steph for 2019-20 and Janie for 2020-21; Steph also received the 2019-20 Rotarian of the Year and Terry Bauer received Rotarian of the Year for 2020-21. AMAZING showing from our Club...thank you and congratulations.
- Thank you to Dan Kusilek for joining the Ft. McCoy Zoom meeting on Thursday to learn about support opportunities for Afghan refugees. Dan provided this update from the meeting:
- Volunteers are primarily required to work through the Red Cross or Catholic Charities. Because of the security protocols at Fort McCoy they are seeking volunteers that can commit to full days for at least a week at a time. They need people available from 9 am to 5 pm to work at the base. They have a shuttle for transportation from La Crosse to the base. There will also be opportunities to help in La Crosse at the Catholic Charities office with donation drop-off days. I sent an email requesting a schedule of dates and times that they will need assistance with this.
- Catholic Charities has a page on their website listing items that they need and additional information. https://cclse.org/afghanistan-refugee-assistance/ Money is preferred. There are links to donate. They have also put together an Amazon and Target registry for purchasing goods. The purchased goods will be shipped directly to Catholic Charities. There is also a link on the page to sign up as a volunteer. I signed up to be on their mailing list so as updates come out I should be staying informed.
- The Red Cross does not have much on their website, but monetary donations are always helpful.
- We will discuss this further at our next onsite Club meeting.
- Mother Nature did not cooperate with Moon Tunes last week, but this week is looking good! Volunteers are needed--please click the Moon Tunes volunteer sign up below if you are able to come down to Riverside Park.
- Exciting news from Julie Nelson! Julie begins a new position at Northside Elementary this week as the Community School Coordinator! Julie will be connecting people to resources, improving the lives of students, their families and neighbors. Congratulations, Julie.
- The La Crosse Downtown Rotary Club has a great Habitat for Humanity volunteer opportunity available, if you are interested. Following is the message from Downtown Rotary:
Mark your calendars: Our next Mobile Meals week is Sept. 20-26. Heidi has emailed the sign-up information to all Rotarians.
Have a great week, Clubbers! See you Wednesday at the Trane All-Abilities Park-

Donating the number of years at your birthday to the Rotary Foundation for Polio has become a club tradition. Just log in to My Rotary and click on donate. The participation has been truly awesome and given the average age of our club, this is a significant amount of money!
