Welcome to my seventh effort at the club newsletter! Will the widgets be kind this week? I’m crossing my fingers and thinking only nice thoughts about widgets.
Presentations
Last week’s presentation by Terry Visger was Terry at her best, reminding us that our brains are wired to respond to narratives, and any time you have information to impart or a product to sell or a nonprofit to raise money for…wrap it in a story. Nobody wants to be confronted with the Naked Truth!
This Wednesday, we are going to meet Sue Kastensen, founder and director of Fair Shake, who I am willing to bet will have stories of her own to tell. This is the beginning of our journey as a club to learn more about the challenges and opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals as they negotiate reentry into society. If you want to learn more about Sue and her organization, either before or after her presentation, I would recommend the Fair Shake website, https://www.fairshake.net/, and an interview with her from 2021, https://rb.gy/zt4vp.
Club Assembly
Next week’s meeting will be dedicated to Club Assembly. We are going to continue holding these on a quarterly basis, and the meeting is an opportunity for each committee to meet and discuss in person. Reports on your meetings will subsequently be shared in this email or an additional club email. This is a reminder to the leaders of each committee to perhaps re-share your reports from the last assembly in March with your groups ahead of time to start them thinking about updates and new ideas. (This idea was blatantly stolen from Shari Lafreddi.)
Reprinted here is the list of committees, grouped into the clusters that Rolan established.

Maui Fires Relief Fund
You should all have received an email from me with a link to Hawaii’s Rotary District 5000 website for donations to help those affected by the fires on Maui. I am reposting it here: https://rb.gy/5vrnb. Tom Sahlstrom may have more information to report on relief efforts and the best way to help when we meet on Wednesday.
Alpaca Pancake Breakfast
Rotary After Hours is hosting an Alpaca Pancake Breakfast as a fundraiser for polio eradication on Saturday, September 2, from 8 to 11 am at Copeland Park. There will be alpacas and ponies, and kids’ activities. It sounds like a great way to tear the (grand)kids away from Saturday morning cartoons.
You can purchase tickets online, at https://rb.gy/47ra3, or from Sierra Lyon when she makes a visit to one of our meetings.
